Wonder Woman is an aspirational character created by William Moulton Marston in 1941 inspired by the author’s wife and Margaret Sanger, the pioneer of birth control. While women have broken through many societal and sexual barriers since then, there have also been major setbacks regarding rights and equality. In light of recent exposure of myriad sexual harassment cases, we are newly aware that we must continue liberating women from blatant and subtle constraints and trespasses. The artist chose to draw this character in a scrambled form like a plastic movable puzzle to remind us of the construction that is still necessary. She used the original Wonder Woman’s image from the 1940s to bring to light not only present struggles but also the history of our incremental triumphs.
About Women’s Prison Association WPA works with women at all stages of criminal justice involvement. WPA promotes alternatives to incarceration and helps women living in the community to avoid arrest or incarceration by making positive changes in their lives. Inside prison and jail, WPA is a source of support to women and a resource to them as they plan for release. After incarceration, women come to WPA for help to build the lives they want for themselves and their families in the community.
